Your Involvement Helps Your School & Others – Thank You!

Did you know that by participating in the Boys & Girls Clubs you are helping your school as well as families less fortunate?

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands gives back to the schools by paying a substantial portion of your service fees back to them to be used at their discretion.  This money helps to provide supplies, fund field trips and other activities not funded through their regular budget.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands uses any income generated from our program to provide quality services to families less fortunate.  Our philosophy is that every child deserves quality aftercare services and that every family should be able to afford those services.  Our sliding fee structure has allowed almost 1,000 students access to quality aftercare at affordable prices.  Most of these children were not able to access any aftercare services prior to our program and they went home unsupervised.

The bigger picture is that most of our aftercare programs not only cover their own costs, but start to help fund our other initiatives, such as providing services at a Club behind the fence at the Department of Juvenile Justice that leads into a re-entry program for offenders returning to their communities, a Club to serve Gonzales Gardens Housing Project, and another Club to serve the Westside Community.  Your involvement will help keep the program affordable to all and help us reach out and serve all the youth in our community who want our services.  Thank You!

Program Highlight - Power Hour & Project Learn

You might have noticed your child talking about “Power Bucks” this school year.  Power Bucks are what the Members earn for doing their homework during Power Hour at their Club.  This incentive program offers Members an extra opportunity to practice and reinforce the skills and concepts they learn in school. Each day they finish their homework and/or educational activity they earn Power Bucks that can be spent at the Power Hour Store on Fridays.

The Clubs use POWER HOUR, a homework help and tutoring program developed by Boys & Girls Clubs of America, to help our members complete their daily school assignments.  Club professionals, volunteers or even older Club members assist younger members.  Members use math skills in the gymnasium for score keeping, in the kitchen for cooking, in the art room for measuring, etc.  They practice literacy skills by reading rules to a new game, writing an article in the Club newsletter, or writing poetry for the bulletin board.  Club activities include family fun nights for parents, teachers and children; hamburger cook-outs and game tournaments; basketball games for adults and teens; and guest speakers or panelists to discuss college and other post high-school options.

Speaking of the Power Hour Store…We need your help!  We would welcome any and all donations of educational, promotional or knick knack type items we can put in our Power Hour stores.  Sample items that you, your business or organization may consider donating include pens/pencils, notebooks, t-shirts, or anything you may have left over in your corporate or home closet.  Please coordinate directly with your Unit Director for any donation.

How Our Staff Are Screened, Selected, and Trained

Our staff is our most valuable asset.  We select our staff based upon their experience, character and passion for working with youth.  Our staff is reviewed semi-annually and detailed professional development plans are followed to ensure they are successful at providing excellent service to our participants.

We take the follwoing steps to make sure the staff and volunteers who work at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands are the right people to care for your children.

1. All adults that interact with our participants go through a thorough screening process that includes reference checks, a national back ground check, and a sex offender registry check.  All adults go through this process annually.  This includes both staff and volunteers.

2. Volunteers are always accompanied by a trained paid youth development professional, and never left alone with the participants.

3. All adults must sign in with a paid professional before entering our program.

All of our staff goes through ongoing training to ensure that your children are provided high quality services in a safe and fun environment. Your child's safety is our number one priority.
